Waterfront Park has enjoyed both popular and critical acclaim. The first two phases of the park, approximately 72, acres, hosts more than a 1.5 million visitors per year. The park’s design has been lauded nationally and internationally and has won a number of prestigious awards, including several from the American Society of Landscape Architects, the leading organization for the profession.

With Phase III construction now under way, the Waterfront will be going in a new direction once again, this time over the river, connecting downtown Louisville to the heart of historic Jeffersonville with the renovation of the Big Four Bridge. The pedestrian/bicycle centered plan will have bench seating on the bridge, providing a unique view of Louisville and Southern Indiana from the middle of the Ohio. Also visible from the span will be a memorial, designed by Louisville sculptor, Ed Hamilton , dedicated to the lasting impact that slavery in Kentucky had on one of America’s greatest Presidents, Abraham Lincoln. The two million dollar memorial, slated for completion in the year of Lincoln’s bicentennial, may well become a national destination point, a reminder of both the humanity of Lincoln and the great tragedy of slavery.
